Thoughts on the Gospel, Life, and Ministry
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. — John 15:5
In his last “I am” statement in John’s Gospel, Jesus presented Himself as the true vine and His followers as the branches to teach us that we can do nothing apart from Him. This image underscores our complete dependence on Him for spiritual life and fruitfulness. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit on its own, we cannot live faithfully or grow in godliness apart from ongoing union with Him. Love for God is only sustained in our lives by remaining connected to Christ through faith. The fruit of our faith is the natural result of abiding in Him.
Abiding in Christ involves cultivating a continual, living relationship with Him. This begins with regular time in His Word, where we hear his voice and have our hearts shaped by truth. It grows through prayer, in which we depend on Him, confess our sin, and align our desires with His holy will. Abiding also means obedience. We respond to His commands and trust Him with daily decisions, and we turn away from distractions and sin that weaken our fellowship with Him. As we remain in Christ in these ways, He works in and through us to produce lasting fruit that reflects His life and glorifies God.
Prayer: Living God, I catch myself believing that I can live and be fruitful outside of You. I can’t. I must remain connected to You to have life in the present and in the world to come. Keep me close to You, for I am prone to wonder.

Weekly Memory Verse: As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? — Psalm 42:1-2
