Loving God and Using Our Gifts

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body — Jews or Greeks, slaves or free — and all were made to drink of one Spirit. — 1 Corinthians 12:12-13

Has God specifically and uniquely gifted you to serve Him and others in the Church? Of course, He has. Every Christian is gifted spiritually by the Holy Spirit. Period. The questions are: what are your gifts, and are you using them for God’s glory and the building up of His Church? That’s the purpose of our gifts, according to Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, where he uses the image of the body to show that no member is unnecessary and no gift is insignificant. Each body part — seen or unseen — contributes to the health and unity of the whole, leading us to understand that our gifts are not for personal recognition, but for serving Christ and His people. Our love for God expresses itself through the faithful stewardship of the gifts He has entrusted to us while recognizing that we are interconnected and dependent on one another.

Using our gifts appropriately begins with identifying and embracing the gifts God has given you, whether they are in teaching, serving, encouraging, giving, leading, or showing mercy. We must pursue humility to acknowledge that our role is one part of a larger whole, and a willingness to step in where we can serve to meet needs. Practically, this means we actively participate in the life of the church, looking for opportunities to serve, supporting others in their gifts, and using our abilities consistently rather than sporadically. As we serve faithfully, the church grows stronger, and Chrsit is made visible through the unity and diversity of His people. So,

Prayer: God of Wisdom, You gave me gifts to use for Your service and the benefit of others. Thank You. Help me to be faithful in my use of them. I want to see You glorified in all that I do.

Reflection Question:

  1. What gifts or abilities has God given you, and how are you currently using them to serve others?
  2. How can you become more actively involved in meeting the needs within your church community?

Weekly Memory Verse: As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? — Psalm 42:1-2
