Devoted Lives Over Empty Worship

But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
— Amos 5:24

In the eighth century BC, the prophet Amos asked the Israelites why they wanted the Day of the Lord to come since they had not returned to the Lord. He did this through a series of questions in Amos 5:18-20 that concluded with “Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it?” Such a day would not bring the deliverance from the Assyrians the Israelites desperately wanted. Rather, it would bring God’s judgment upon them because they participated in empty worship rituals while living unrighteous lives. Our worship cannot be disconnected from our lives. True love for God refuses to be compartmentalized and compels us to live the words we sing on Sunday every day.

God’s call in Amos 5:24 is straightforward as it is compelling: “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Living this way begins with honest self-examination and requires repentance. We must recognize where we fail to reflect Christ’s love and life in our lives. This is particularly true in our tendencies toward preferences that cause us to treat others and their needs with partiality, dishonesty, and indifference. Amos calls us to integrity in our work, fairness in our dealings with others, and compassion toward those in need, leading us to reconcile broken relationships, advocate for what is right, and generously give to serve others. In so doing, we prove that our devotion is deeply rooted in truth and life, not merely external rituals. Will you practice them?

Prayer: Sovereign Lord, give me the grace to examine myself and to repent from my sins. Enable me to live with integrity, fairness, and compassion.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Are there areas in your life where outward worship is not matched by inward obedience or daily conduct?
  2. What specific steps can you take to pursue justice and righteousness in your relationships and responsibilities this week?

Weekly Memory Verse: Indeed, I count everything as loss for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him… — Philippians 3:8-9a
