Restful Hearts

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her. — Luke 10:41-42

Mary and Martha of Bethany present a vivid contrast in how our love for God is expressed. Martha expresses it in service, while Mary expresses her love by sitting at Jesus’s feet and listening to His teaching. In her service, Martha was distracted and overwhelmed with the responsibilities and demands of hospitality. She failed to enjoy the blessing of Christ’s presence in her home. Her heart was pulled in many directions because it was divided. Mary, on the other hand, chose the “good portion” by devoting her heart solely to Christ and resting in His presence. These two sisters remind us that love for God is not measured by activity alone, but by our willingness to be with Him. In our busy world, with all its constant demands, it is possible to do many good things for God while neglecting the one thing necessary: communion with Christ.

Jesus gently corrected Martha to reorder her priorities, not to diminish her service. Love for God leads us to rest first in His presence before we labor in His name. Laboring without rest results in burnout and eventual disdain for the Lord we serve. Yet, when we sit at Christ’s feet through the study of His Word and prayer, we are, as one commentator wrote, “recentered and our anxieties are quieted. Resting in God is not laziness; it’s a deliberate act of trust.” When we rest, we acknowledge that our worth and security are found in Him instead of in our productivity. This makes our service joyful rather than burdensome. As He did with Mary, Jesus invites us to choose the better portion daily, to develop a love for God that settles our souls amid life’s busyness. Follow Mary’s lead and start your day by sitting at His feet.

Prayer: Father, I am busy. Too busy to sit at Your feet because I believe my value is found in the many things I do for You. Help me to rest in Your grace and trust You with my life as I find my value in Christ and His work.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What “distractions” in your life most often pull you away from resting in God’s presence?
  2. How can you intentionally create space each day this week to sit at Christ’s feet in Word and prayer?

Weekly Memory Verse: Indeed, I count everything as loss for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him… — Philippians 3:8-9a
